This Nichiren Buddhist temple was constructed with Nichiren as its founder. As with Myohoji Temple, it was reportedly built at the site of a house built by Nichiren to propagate his teachings in Kamakura (Matsubagayatu Hounan site). The predecessor of this temple is said to be a cave Nichiren used as a training hall for the Nichiren sect, where he also reportedly wrote "Rissho Ankokuron," a famous book of his teachings. Nichiren's pupil Nichiro later built "Ankokuron-kutsu (cave)-dera" beside the cave, which became called Ankokuronji.
