Egaratenjinsha Shrine
This is one of Japan's three famous shrines dedicated to the deified spirit of Sugawara Michizane, who was the god of scholarship. In 1104 legend this shrine was built because a picture of the Tenjin god, or the deified spirit of Sugawara Michizane, fell to this place from the sky during a rain storm.
Tourist attractions include Kappa Fudezuka (a picture by Shimizu Kon of Kappa, a legendary water sprite, with calligraphy by Kawabata Yasunari), a picture of Kappa by a cartoonist, Ozaki Meidou haiku-inscribed monument, and gingko trees.

Annual events: Fude Kuyo, or memorial service for used writing brushes(January 25), Hari Kuyo, or memorial service for used needles (February 8), saikou-sai (July 20), rei-sai (July 25), efudezuka Festival (October).
