This temple was founded in 1181 by the high-ranking priest Mongaku under the sponsorship of Minamoto Yoritomo. It belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The temple was used by Minamoto Yoritomo, Genji's chief commander, to offer prayers and is thought to be where memorial services were held for the repose of his soul after his death. Many of its treasures have connections with Yoritomo. Above all, of the greatest historical value is a red flag - the symbolic flag for the Heishi family, Genji's opponent - which was reportedly carried by Heishi's chief commander Taira-no-Munemori until he was killed.
