Kewaizaka Pass
This is one of Kamakura's seven Kiridoshi, or steep slopes. Opinion is divided on the origin of the name Kewaizaka, or make-up slope: Some say this was where make-up was applied to the heads of dead Heike warriors. Others say this was a red-light district. The area is also known as a battlefield where Nitta Yoshisada attacked the Kamakura government. The winding mountain path to Genjiyama Park is slippery, so it's safer to wear athletic shoes.
