Manpukuji Temple

This Shingon sect temple stands in a beautiful setting overlooking a wide expanse of water at the front and with mountain ranges behind. In the Nara period, Gyoki, a high-ranking priest, offered a prayer here at the order of Shomu Emperor to eliminate a serious infectious disease that was prevalent in the Kanto area. The prayer was answered and this temple was founded by Gyoki in thanks. It is also famous as the place where Minamoto Yoshitsune, a hero in battles against Heiji, washed his hands. Yoshitsune was refused entry to Kamakura after his victory of Heiji in 1185 because he had disobeyed the orders of his brother Yoritomo and was then pursued by him.
