Myohoji Temple

This is how Myohoji Temple was created: Its original house was built by Nichiren to propagate his teachings in Kamakura, but was burned down by monks and warriors of Kamakura (Matsubagayatu Hounan). At its site was built Hokkedo, again by Nichiren, which was called Hongokuji Temple. The temple was later transferred to Kyoto in the Muromachi era, and in 1357 a new temple - Myohoji Temple - was built by Nichiei to pray for the soul of his dead father.
This temple is also known as "Kokedera", or moss temple, for its beautiful tone stairs covered with moss. It belongs to the Nichiren Buddhist sect.
