Senjuin Temple

As one of the sub-temples of Komyoji Temple, Senjuin was used as a training hall for Jodo Buddhist priests when Komyoji enjoyed its fame as a renowned place of study called Dai-Danrin. When the number of priests decreased during the Edo period, it was gradually transformed into Terakoya, a place where children were taught reading and writing. There is a monument to Terakoya inscribed with a haiku by Matsuo Basho. Kamakura Goddess of Mercy No.20 / 33.
