Sugimotodera Temple
This temple was founded by the high-ranking priest Gyoki, and is said to be the oldest holy Buddhist site in Kamakura, existing since before Minamoto Yoritomo entered Kamakura. Its long history is told by its approach stairs of stones covered with moss and the flags with calligraphic characters that flutter on either side of the approach. Tourist attractions include a set of three wooden statues of a standing Kannon Bosatsu, the Goddess of Mercy. The left one, which is designated as a municipal cultural asset, is also called Fukumen Kannon, and was reportedly made by Gyoki. The other two are designated as important national cultural properties, and were reportedly made by Ennin and Genshin. There is also a monument with a haiku by Ozaki Ryodo.
