This is used to be an execution ground. Nichiren, founder of the Nichiren sect, narrowly escaped being executed here. To commemorate this event, his pupil Nippo built a sanctuary to house a statue of Nichiren in 1337. Later in 1601, local believers donated land to enlarge the temple to its present scale.
Tourist attractions include a five-storied pagoda, a cave where Nichiren was confined for execution, and a rock called Shikikawa-ishi where Nichiren sat while he was confined.
