Wakamiya Oji Street

Wakamiya Oji street, which is an approach road to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine starting at Yuigahama beach, was reportedly constructed by Minamoto Yoritomo to pray for an easy delivery by his wife Hojo Masako. This street played a central role in building the landscape of Kamakura city. On the way to the shrine there are three sacred gateways called Torii along the street. They are numbered first, second, and third, from the beach side. Between the second and third gateways is a scenic spot called Dankazura, where the street is trimmed with a line of rocks on either side. This is one of the Japan's 100 most beautiful streets. Rows of restaurants and boutiques stand at both sides.
